Set up a pretend shop with made-up price labels and practice money. An item costing 3 units paid for with a 5-unit note needs 2 units in change. Swap buyer and seller roles to practice both sides of the transaction.
Keep pretend money separate from real money and use one practice currency at a time. Count the price and change together to reach the amount handed over. The activity represents quantities and imaginary transactions.
Work through one example aloud before independent practice. To check 18 + 7 = 25, calculate 25 − 7. If a word problem asks about meters or coins, include that unit and check whether the answer fits the situation.
