Keep the substitution consistent
In a substitution cryptogram, the same symbol represents the same letter throughout the message. Keep spaces visible so you can study word lengths. When you propose a letter, apply it to every instance of that symbol before drawing further conclusions.
Use patterns and test guesses
Look for repeated letters within words and short words that fit the sentence. A frequent letter is a clue, not a certainty. Keep a symbol–letter table and remove a guess if it creates a contradiction elsewhere in the text.
