Use traditional colors or invent another version. Check that hands, clothing and objects remain distinguishable when neighboring areas share a color.
Try a small palette
Choose three or four colors and test them together on scrap paper. Repeat a color in separate areas to connect them visually, or leave some spaces white. With markers, place a protective sheet underneath and check whether ink shows through.
