How to begin

Find the body, face, ears and tail. Create a plain, striped or spotted cat while following the direction of its fur. Keep areas around eyes and whiskers clear so the features remain visible.

Review your work

Decide where markings end before filling them. Add a soft shadow underneath if you want to place the cat on the ground, keeping it distinct from the animal’s markings.

Try a small palette

Choose three or four colors and test them together on scrap paper. Repeat a color in separate areas to connect them visually, or leave some spaces white. With markers, place a protective sheet underneath and check whether ink shows through.
