Killer sudoku adds cages with a target sum. Alongside the row, column and box rules, each cage’s digits add to its clue and do not repeat within that cage. A two-cell cage totaling 3 must contain 1 and 2, in the order permitted by its crossings.

What to check

Do not confuse a cage with a box; a cage can cross box boundaries. In a classic grid, digits 1–9 total 45 in each row, column and box, which can help connect cages. Cages add rules; they are not just a difficulty label.

Write only what you can justify

Compare the row, column and box before entering a digit. If several options remain, note them as small candidates and return later. An entry is confirmed by the board’s rules, not by making a row look neatly ordered.
