This variant uses digits 1 through 6. Each row, column and 2 × 3 box contains each digit once. There are 36 cells altogether. Check the box shape before solving; boxes are not always square.
What to check
If a row contains every digit except 6, that is its remaining candidate, but it must also fit the column and box. Do not enter digits larger than 6 out of habit from playing 9 × 9 sudoku.
Write only what you can justify
Compare the row, column and box before entering a digit. If several options remain, note them as small candidates and return later. An entry is confirmed by the board’s rules, not by making a row look neatly ordered.
