What this ruling is for
A musical staff has five lines and four spaces. Choose a clef before placing notes because it determines how those positions are named. Leave room at the beginning for the piece’s notation.
Before using it
Place each notehead clearly on a line or in a space. Keep staves separated when adding lyrics or ledger lines. Staff paper does not prescribe a clef or time signature.
Preserve scale when it matters
If you will measure on the sheet, print at 100% or actual size and check a distance with a ruler. “Fit to page” can change the spacing. For free writing, choose a line size that gives you comfortable room.
