Use a card to ask a question and let the learner explain a strategy before checking. For 7 × 8, one explanation is 7 × 4 = 28 and double 28 is 56.
Use a card to ask a question and let the learner explain a strategy before checking. For 7 × 8, one explanation is 7 × 4 = 28 and double 28 is 56. Separate secure facts from cards that need another round.
Shuffle cards so their order does not become the clue. Alternate spoken answers, representations with objects and written calculations. For double-sided cards, test the layout to check that questions and answers line up.
Work through one example aloud before independent practice. To check 18 + 7 = 25, calculate 25 − 7. If a word problem asks about meters or coins, include that unit and check whether the answer fits the situation.
