A number line places numbers at regular intervals. For 4 + 3, start at 4 and move three one-unit intervals to reach 7.
A number line places numbers at regular intervals. For 4 + 3, start at 4 and move three one-unit intervals to reach 7. For 7 − 3, move three intervals toward smaller values.
Count jumps, not tick marks: the starting mark is not your first jump. Check the scale, because an interval may represent 1, 2, 5 or a fraction depending on the exercise.
Work through one example aloud before independent practice. To check 18 + 7 = 25, calculate 25 − 7. If a word problem asks about meters or coins, include that unit and check whether the answer fits the situation.
