Try an example

Number bonds show how parts make a whole. For 10, use 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6 or 5 + 5. Arrange ten counters and split them into two groups to check each pair.

What to check

If you know one part and the whole, find the missing part: 10 = 6 + □ gives 4. Then connect addition and subtraction using the same three numbers: 6 + 4 = 10 and 10 − 6 = 4.

Explain and check

Work through one example aloud before independent practice. To check 18 + 7 = 25, calculate 25 − 7. If a word problem asks about meters or coins, include that unit and check whether the answer fits the situation.
