Try an example

Count coins by value, not just by how many there are. One dollar and two 50-cent pieces total two dollars. In a pretend transaction, an item costing $1.40 paid for with $2 leaves 60 cents in change.

What to check

Use the currency shown in the activity and keep the same unit throughout the calculation. Coins from different currencies are not interchangeable because their numbers look similar. Distinguish the currency symbol from the number of coins.

Explain and check

Work through one example aloud before independent practice. To check 18 + 7 = 25, calculate 25 − 7. If a word problem asks about meters or coins, include that unit and check whether the answer fits the situation.
