Observe the theme’s shapes

Before choosing colors, locate long tails, necks, crests and footprints. Separate foreground and background, then test a short palette on scrap paper. Repeat a color to connect details in different parts of the picture.

After the activity

Distinguish what an illustration shows from what a footprint can tell you; a decorative picture is not a scientific reconstruction. Observe dinosaur silhouettes and compare necks, tails and other visible features.

Try a small palette

Choose three or four colors and test them together on scrap paper. Repeat a color in separate areas to connect them visually, or leave some spaces white. With markers, place a protective sheet underneath and check whether ink shows through.
