How to solve a word search

1. Check the list and directions

Read every word before scanning the grid and clarify unfamiliar ones. Check whether across, down, diagonal and reverse directions are allowed. A word-search entry follows a straight line; it cannot bend around a corner to complete its letters.

2. Start with a distinctive feature

Choose a word with a distinctive starting letter or letter pair. For MOON, locate M and check for an adjacent O in an allowed direction. Continue to the second O and N only when the start fits. Discard a start as soon as one letter fails to match.

3. Mark a whole word

On paper, circle or underline from the first to the last letter, then mark the list entry. On screen, select its endpoints. Do not cross off a word after finding only part of it. Entries can cross or share a letter.

4. Scan in an orderly way

If a word remains hidden, scan rows or columns in a consistent order rather than jumping between areas. For backward words, locate the final letter and verify the sequence in reverse, provided that direction is allowed. Switching to another word can also help you examine the board carefully.

5. Check spelling

Compare every letter with the list, including repeated letters. Follow the activity’s convention for accents and ñ. For vocabulary practice, write a word afterward using normal spelling or put it in a sentence; finding letters and understanding meaning are related but different tasks.

6. Choose the next challenge

Increase word count, add directions or choose less familiar vocabulary, changing one condition at a time. Large print changes presentation and does not require easy difficulty. For a custom puzzle, avoid duplicates or words contained in others when the generator does not allow them.
