With a common denominator, add equal-sized parts: 1/5 + 2/5 = 3/5. With different denominators, find equivalent parts: 1/2 + 1/4 = 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.

Do not add the denominators; they describe the size of the parts. Represent the addends using equal-sized wholes and simplify the answer when appropriate. A sum can exceed one whole; do not rule that out.
Work through one example aloud before independent practice. To check 18 + 7 = 25, calculate 25 − 7. If a word problem asks about meters or coins, include that unit and check whether the answer fits the situation.
